SIBLING BY AXEL HOEDT

Where are you right now?

In my home office/dressing room.

What is your current state of mind?

Busy and positive.

Where do you feel most at home?

In bed with my husband Sid and my dog Mycroft, my bookshelves next to me and a pen and paper in hand working.

Why fashion?

I’m good at it.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

I have to give two examples; 1. “Learn to delegate, choose the correct person for the job and let them get on with it” (Lee McQueen) 2. “There’s always money in naughty knickers” (my first boss)

What was the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Dressing up, wearing make-up as a teenager in Leicester in the 80s. I was fearless from an early age.

What is your perfect idea of happiness? When and where were you happiest?

When I lived in New York in the 90s. Myself and David Kappo lived a life of Riley. I stayed in only one night in all my time there and didn’t see a single piece of art or culture unless there was free booze being given out! David taught me the skills of positive thinking/living, how to only care about things that matter. That’s why I still love him and New York. The partying may of changed but the mind set was for life.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

My hair, its really fine on top, its a family trait. I hate it.

What is your greatest fear?

I am pretty fearless.

Which living person do you most admire?

Any one who can hold down a shitty job for limited rewards and no respect, raise a family and keep positive. That is worthy of admiration. I also have a great admiration for April Ashley. Anyone who overcame being transgender in 1940′s working class Liverpool to have gender reassignment surgery in 1960‘s Morocco has got (pardon the pun) balls.

What is your greatest extravagance?

A Hermes 50cm HAC.

What was the last thing you bought?

A silver charm of Saint Dymphna – Irish born, she is the patron saint of the nervous, emotionally disturbed and mentally ill (collection research).

What is your most treasured possession?

My art. If I had to choose, single out a piece it would be my Karlheinz Weinberger photograph. It’s a large print contemporary to the image of a group of rebellious looking youths at a fairground in Zurich, 1962. It constantly inspires my work.

What would you like to be reincarnated as?

A working class hero.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I’m very proud of my marriage. My husband’s quite a catch.

If I wasn’t doing this job, I would have liked to be…

In bed, or a singer of torch songs wearing a ratty sequin dress in a smoky piano bar.

What are you reading right now?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame – Victor Hugo (a French classic and VERY long) & The Dreams of a Celt – Mario Vargas Llosa (an real Irish republicans history fictionalised)

What was the last film you watched?

Space Odyssey 2001 and I found it beautiful but shockingly dull. I’ve been watching a lot of TV recently. I love those Scandinavian crime thrillers.

If your life could be a film, which would it be?

Sweet Charity.

Sid watching ‘You’ve Been Framed’, the TV program of home movies of people falling over, he cries laughing at it which is the most wondrous sight and sound in the world.

What makes you cry?

Heroic acts of kindness.

Do you have a mentor or inspirational figure that has guided or influenced you?

My friend David Kappo was enormously influential in my life. I always hear his voice when I’m trying to prioritise things of importance.

Do I have to?
